The 2017 NASA/ESA Conference on Adaptive Hardware and Systems (AHS-2017) will be held July 24 – 27, 2017, at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA, USA.
The purpose of the conference is to bring together leading researchers from the adaptive hardware and systems community to exchange experiences and share new ideas in the field. The conference expands the topics addressed by the precursor series of NASA/DoD Conference on Evolvable Hardware, held between 1999 and 2005, with a broader scope. This includes a variety of hardware and system adaptation methods and targeting more industry participation. The NASA/ESA series started with the AHS-2006 conference held in Istanbul, Turkey, and continued annually since at a variety of international venues.
Adaptation reflects the capability of a system to maintain or improve its performance in the context of internal or external changes, such as uncertainty and variation during fabrication, faults and degradation in the field, changes in the operational environment, incidental or intentional interference, different users and preferences, modifications of standards and requirements, or trade-offs between performance requirements and available resources.
This year the conference extends its themes to the strategic areas of adaptation in robotic systems and unmanned vehicles.
We welcome original contributions in the areas of hardware and software adaptation at different system levels, including, but not limited to:
1) Adaptation in hardware, for example as manifested in:
- Reconfigurable circuits
- Circuits and structures
- Prosthetic hardware
- Wearable devices
2) Algorithms for adaptation, in contexts such as:
- Optimization, learning, and evolution
- Coordination and cooperation
- Fault tolerance and robustness
3) Design methodologies for adaptive systems, e.g., related to:
- Computer-aided design
- Performance, cost, power, and reliability strategies
- Formal methods
4) Adaptation in robotics and unmanned systems, as reflected in:
- Sensing and perception
- Navigation and mapping
- Human-robot interaction
- Multi-robot teams
- Cognitive architectures
- Tensegrity and compliance
- Soft robots
5) Applications in areas such as:
- Space systems and missions
- Autonomous vehicles
- Social systems, economics, and finance
- Biotechnology and pharma
- Assisted living and healthcare
While the general theme of this conference is on communications and space applications, we welcome original contributions in other application areas such as consumer, medical, defense and security, as the techniques employed in these areas can be disseminated across the board. We also welcome papers describing significant applications of adaptive hardware and systems to industrial case studies and demonstrating their capabilities and effectiveness.
